Gesture
Monoprints by Patricia Canelake
Curated and presented by Ghost Ship Gallery
Ghost Ship is proud to present a rare monoprint show by Lake Superior artist Patricia Canelake. Gesture takes us on hiatus from Canelake’s striking large-scale oil paintings to focus in on the iconic subject matter established throughout her career. The figures are gestural. The subjects float in a balance between storytelling and rough elegance. The narrative is a simple expression influenced by her time at The Fine Arts Work Center Print Studio in Provincetown, Massachusetts and the North Shore region of Lake Superior where she lives and works.
Through Gesture, we offer another window into the world of Patricia Canelake where each figure is known to the artist and represents a natural moment.
All prints are made using an etching press on archival 100% cotton paper or handmade paper made locally near Knife River, MN. All are original, titled, and signed by the artist. Print techniques are noted with all works, using combinations of monotype, etching, paper plate lithography, and silkscreen. This makes each print unique and one of a kind.
Patricia Canelake grew up on the Iron Range in Virginia, Minnesota where her father ran a handmade candy shop. She presently dips chocolates at her family’s candy shop in Knife River, which is next door to her painting and printmaking studios facing the scenic highway along Lake Superior.
Simple figurative and animal subjects, leashed and unleashed, are the focus of her work. She was awarded two McKnight Foundation Fellowships, a Jerome Foundation Travel and Study Grant, The Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Fellowships, and the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council award. Her art is in permanent collections at the Tweed Museum of Art and The Department of the Interior, United States.
She has exhibited at The Minneapolis Institute of Art (Minneapolis, Minnesota), Provincetown Arts Association (Provincetown, Massachusetts), Fine Arts Work Center (Provincetown, Massachusetts), Lanesboro Art Center (Lanesboro, Minnesota), Drawing Center (New York, NY), Gayle Elston Gallery (New York, NY), Bond Street Gallery (New York, NY), Headlands Center for the Arts (Fort Barry, California) and in various Minnesota and Lake Superior regional galleries.
